"God speaks, and God is to be heard, not only on Sinai, not only in my own heart but in the voice of the stranger ... God must be allowed the right to speak unpredictably."

Thomas Merton wrote these words in the early 1960s but they are clearly relevant to our lives and to the events of today. Merton invites us to listen for the presence of God in challenging places: in the mystery of the natural world; in an internal silence beyond language; and, perhaps most difficult of all, in the words and behaviour of those people whom we think of as different, alien, or even the enemy.

How can we really listen to the voices of 'strangers'?

How can we be open to understand and explore their meaning?

How can we engage in authentic and life-changing dialogue?

'The voice of the stranger' is the theme for the seventh General Meeting of the Thomas Merton Society of Great Britain and Ireland  to be held from 4th to 6th April 2008. Our venue is once again Thomas Merton’s old school at Oakham.

Oakham School

In 2008 we return to Oakham School for the fifth time. Built over 400 years ago and set in some of the most beautiful countryside in England, Oakham is the school which Thomas Merton attended between 1929 and 1933. The school has grounds covering over 60 acres and is easily accessible by road and rail.
